The Afterward was a hard book to review. It's boring, but romantic, and well-paced, but nothing really happens? but I still love it? he book focuses more on the AFTER of what happens when a group of heroes come back to town after saving the king, and that is what makes it different because you never really focus on the after once the main quest is over. How do their lives change? Is it good or bad? We see both aspects in Johnston's novel.

My biggest gripe with the story is that it is less action/adventure and more focused on drama, societal expectations, and everything in between. If you go into this expectation of constant sword-fighting and saving damsels, you'll be disappointed since this is the opposite.

As a plus, there is a f/f relationship between two young people of color.
