As it turns out in this book, there is more to the interaction than you might suspect from reading the first few chapters of Lynda La Plante's Tennison.

Jane Tennison is taken aback when male police officers are referring to WPC's as 'plonkers' and often the few women at the police station are the victims of practical jokes by men.

However, as she gets a chance to experience what it is like to be part of a murder investigation and later with an alleged robbery... she turns out to make some valuable observations, earning respect of her male colleagues and her one female colleague and friend. But of course, being a part of the team in Hackney as a probationary exercise, she still has a lot to learn.
