I have always loved British mysteries and suspense books and this one looks good. It appears to be set in 1970s London--the time of transister radios and Janice Joplin. The focus of this story is a young Woman Police Constable name Jane Tennison. Jane is portrayed as the kind of compassionate and caring person who helped an older woman home after a fall--knowing that she. herself, would be in trouble for being late. Her boss, Sergeant Harris, is very old school, believing that women have no place in the police force. Rather, when there is a conference relation to the murder of a teenaged street girl, Jane's roll is to fetch tea and bisquets for the "real police officers", clean the kitchen area, run errands, and stay out of the way.

Two things draw me to this book. First, I am intrigued at the idea of the story of a woman trying to break into a man's world at the beginning of the time of the woman's movement. Sound interesting. Second, I suspect that Jane (and perhaps the elderly woman and her son introduced early in the book) will play a key roll in unraveling the mystery of the murder of the teenager.

I look forward to reading this book!
