When reading the description of the book before reading the first look I was taken in by the premise that this woman is a retired spy. Normally that type of thing would be the end of the story not the beginning. There were a lot of characters introduced that I wasn't entirely straight on by the end of the excerpt, but they mostly seemed fully fleshed out enough to be distinguishable.
