I blazed through this book, and not just because it's a relatively brief novel. The writing style grabbed me and I was immersed in the untraditional, lyrical writing style that felt more like a tumble through the rapids than a float down a lazy stream. (But in a good way!) It has threads of poetry, stream of consciousness, and coming of age, all at once. If you pick up this book, I'd definitely give it a good 40 pages to really sink into the flow of the story and wrap your mind around the writing style. There are sections / bits of text / snippets really, that are written in the / style as demonstrated that give it a poetic feel. The whole book isn't like that, but it seems a little more prevalent at the beginning, so give yourself time to get a feel for it and see the main thread of the story emerge. The author did an interview with Bookpage that explains part of her thought process and intentions with the themes of time and family that helped clarify some threads that I was processing.
