This excerpt did not grab me. At first, I was very intrigued by the concept and enjoyed the prologue chapters, but when the odd, choppy writing style using backslashes continued into the first few chapters of the book, I found myself getting annoyed. It was pulling me out of the story and more often than not confused me rather than enhanced my reading experience. Granted, I'm sure everything that I was getting confused about gets explained as the book goes on, but I found myself zoning out. Admittedly, I have read an AS King book before and DNF'd it, so I'm sure my mindset going into the book wasn't as favorable as it could have been. That being said, I always appreciate the monumental effort it takes to write a novel so while this one didn't grab me, I'm sure others will love it.
