While memoirs are not always my favorite genre, this one stands apart from the pack.

MacDonald writes about her past as an adoptee, and her experience surrendering her own son. It was a poignant novel about loss and sacrifices made within families.

This memoir definitely made me want to fight even harder for a more equitable future for women. So much of what MacDonald has to give up was due to unnecessary societal pressures placed upon women. Though things are notably better now, there are still far too many pressures and expectations on women that could likely lead to less than ideal situations.

It was incredibly interesting to me to hear about MacDonald’s time in the home in Arizona. I commend the bravery it must have taken to relive this in order to write about it. I truly felt like I was there with her, feeling the emotions and meeting all the same people.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes memoirs, or is just interested in a touching book that’s full of heart
