Sunny and his friends are nerds. As they say themselves, they see themselves as social outcasts at school, which is only amplified by everyone ignoring them and the occasional jerk bullying them.

When Cirrus Soh and her family move into town, Sunny is immediately blown away by how cool and pretty she is. Due to a misunderstanding and an open door, Cirrus thinks that Sunny’s brother’s room (the same brother who hasn’t been in contact for quite a while) is in fact Sunny’s, he feels compelled to keep up a lie so Cirrus likes him.

Honestly, this goes well for Sunny much longer than I expected, and it definitely sucked for him when he started to have stronger feelings for Cirrus.

sunny and his parents
His parents are workaholics and barely talk to him, which gives him as much freedom as he needs to do whatever he wants, usually. Years back, they moved from a poorer neighborhood to where they live now, a high end town where they have bigger clients and make more money and to me, it seems like it’s kind of gotten to their heads.

sunny and his friends
His friends are supportive of Sunny but aren’t afraid to call him out on his BS, so I appreciate them and their genuine friendships with each other. I wish there was more of it in the book though. He also makes new friends! And I really appreciate that Yoon doesn’t keep that weird stereotype about nerds and jocks being opposite ends of the popularity scale.

ultimately
The story wraps up perfectly and the narration/plot itself are much lighter than Yoon’s other book, though I was definitely on edge for most of it while Sunny continued to perpetuate his lies to impress Cirrus.
