Amandla is a young biracial girl living in Sugar Town, in a one-room house in South Africa. She lives with her fragile mother Annalisa, who sometimes will have depressive episodes so severe she's unable to care for her daughter. As Annalisa sinks deeper into depression and madness, she wants Amandla to do whatever it takes to bring Annalisa's husband (and Amandla's father) back to them.
We meet a cast of characters in this book: Lil Bit, Amandla's best friend; Amanda Bollard (Amandla's grandmother), and several neighbors who look out for Amandla and try to help her.
I really loved the writing in this book. It is relatable and rich, and if I closed my eyes I could envision the home in which Amandla and her mother live, and how their lives were. I'm really looking forward to reading more of this book, so I can find out what Amandla does with the fact that her mother has been hiding many things from her.
