Amandla is half black, half white, and she lives in the poor township Sugar Town of South Africa with her white mother Annalisa. Her mom is often plagued by delusions and lapses in memory and refuses to tell Amandla anything about her side of the family. By chance Amandla finds out that she's the granddaughter of the affluent Amanda Bollard.

Her grandmother has a heart condition and no one is sure whether she will survive her next operation, so this may be the last chance Amandla has to get to know her. But her grandfather is a vicious racist who doesn't want either Annalisa or Amandla near the rest of the family. This is the main plot of the story. She has her best friend Lil Bit along for the ride, as well as another girl named Goodness.

There's this one big plot point in the second half of the story that I thought was unnecessary and made the book drag. There's also some romance thrown in that I really didn't care about. It's a good story, and the ending is satisfying, but it's not a book I'll be revisiting.

My favorite quote:

"She needs to burn everything...That’s the fastest way to heal a wound. With fire."
