Sugar Town Queens was an absolutely fantastic coming-of-age story. This story follows a 15-year-old girl named Amandla who is trying to navigate her life dealing with her mother's mental illness and her conflict in not being black enough or white enough for her peers at school. However, she faces a new struggle when she learns the truth about her mother's family and history.
This was absolutely a thrilling and amazing read! This book had it all. To the family drama, dark secrets, love, tragedy, amazing plot and the characters!!!! The characters were incredibly well written and are super loveable. Amandla is such a fantastic point of view and a really strong character. The way the author describes the setting and the culture of this town in South Africa is really wonderful and not overwhelming at all. Also, this book does a wonderful job of unpacking many heavy topics such as poverty vs wealth, danger, bigotry, racism, homophobia, misogyny, mental illness, violence, and more.
Thank you Bookish First for an ARC of this in exchange for an honest review.
