The first-person narrator is a young girl whose Zulu name means power, but her home life seems to lack that quality. She is a mixed-race daughter of a white mother and an absent black father. Unfortunately, the mind of the mother is absent, and everyone up and down the dirt streets and dim alleys of Sugar Town seems to know this. I found this plot instantly interesting and look forward to finishing this book!
