From the very first chapter, the author gives you a strong sense of the community in Sugar Town, which I appreciated and really felt added to the story. Amandla is a relatable character and the storyline with her mother and the mystery address feels super compelling so far. Why all the secrecy?! I feel as in the dark as Amandla has been for most of her life and I want to know more.
I thought the cover was bright, beautiful, and appealing, though it seems a bit incongruous with what I've read of the book so far. The first look chapters focus primarily of the somewhat dark and mysterious relationship of Amandla to her mother and other family. The cover, on the other hand, seems more and friendship focused.
