A book like this one, about family and relationships is highly reliant upon characterization, and this book has a strong young female character that jumps right off the page. Like her name's meaning, "freedom," Amandla is strong even when the forces that make up her world, namely her mother, is a bit unbalanced. It would be a pleasure to see how this young woman carves out a piece of the world for herself.
