A retelling of the "Three Kingdoms" (which I've never read, so I went in with little expectations.)

In this book we follow Zephyr, a strategist to Ren, a warrior who fights for the protection of the new leader of the empire. Due to politics, different sides have formed and have begun fighting for control.

This book has everything: females leading everyone into the fray, political agendas, war tactics, and the art of strategy. It's use of Chinese literature is amazing, and it really captivated me.

With that said, English readers should keep in mind that this book mainly falls into the Xianxia category of Chinese books (which is something more Chinese authors are starting to bring to the western market). Basically Xianxia is a genre that focuses on spirituality and multiple realms, which this book does touch on and take some liberties with.

Halfway through the book the genre changes from historical fiction to a more fantastical, Xianxia/Wuxia quality to it.

Overall though, it was a great read!
