Filled with powerful female protagonists, this excerpt ropes you in and binds you tight. Warriors mistrust strategists, thinking that only valor, strength and skill have any merit. But any decent king, emperor or chief knows a battle may well stand or fall on a cunning strategist.

That is what we have here, in the form of one Pan Qilin. Known by Zephyr as well as other soubriquets, she’s been outwitting death since outlaws raided her village. She doesn’t care if they were on her side, soldiers gone rogue or minor bandits. That day tore apart her world and made her determined to survive, no matter what it took.

This excerpt makes us witness to her loyalty to one Xin Ren, a woman with imperial ties who is in direct challenge to one Miasma, a brutal female antagonist who thinks she should be the one in charge. Xin Ren shows mercy, compassion and a love of the people that is entirely lacking in Miasma, who is willing to kill a bound prisoner without hesitation.

Zephyr’s efforts to keep her mistress safe are thwarted by the stupidity of a warrior woman who botched her instructions. We witness just what drastic steps she must take to fix the error. This is a woman with nerves of steel, ruthless cunning and razor-sharp calculation. What others call miracles she considers well-ordered planning.

It’s going to be a thrill to see how she extricates herself from the enemy camp and how she wins the day for her beloved mistress. This may be a tale of fantastic derring-do but it is also a novel worth savoring.
