Marie Lu has written something completely different than her usual sci-fi/fantasy, with this enemies-to-lovers spy meets popstar romance action novel. If this premise feels like something you would find on Wattpad or another fanfic site then you are not alone, but the action sequences and intriguing mystery/spy thriller plot kept this story engaging and exciting. While it is not like anything this author has done before, she does it well.
The characters of Winter and Sydney are fleshed out and each have their own backstories that perfectly explain the character's motives. I do think that Winter's character is slightly more fleshed out than Sydney's, both characters POVs allow readers to get to know them more and connect with what they are going through. Personally, I thought that Winter was a more interesting character, but Sydney was a character I'd be more interested in seeing long term.
