Marie Lu's "Stars and Smoke" is a treat to read. Lu is a disciplined writer who keeps the plot moving and the characters realistic. And that's a tall order, considering the characters are teenage mega pop stars and undercover agents and the plot is to infiltrate a billionaire criminal tycoon. Lu makes this a fun, poignant, and exciting read. Winter Young, the mega pop star, has depth to him and it's as enjoyable to get to know him through his relationship with his mom as it is to hear what designer outfit he is wearing now. Sydney Cossette, the spy, is sharp-witted and tough with plenty of vulnerabilities to help her grow and change. I particularly enjoyed the insight into Winter as a musician and how he navigates the impact of his music as he becomes a record-smashing superstar. So, pick up this book for the keep-you-on-your-toes spy story, but stay for the characters you wish you could have a cup of tea with.
