This is a wonderful story for both Middle-Grade and older readers alike. It has a really great message that can be applied to not only fat-shaming but any sort of body-shaming. This book also touched on racial prejudice, as well. I feel like this book would be an especially good read for pre-teen girls because they are starting to experience a lot of body shame, whether it is over their weight, their skin, etc. It could also be an excellent read for parents as well since it shows an example of one parent who is supportive and another who is emotionally detrimental.

This book allows those who are fortunate enough to not be shamed in such a way to understand what it is like for those who are... and for those who are shamed over their body or some other aspect, this book shows that they are not alone and that there are good people out there, even if they may seem hard to find at first.
