It has been a while since I have read a book that wasn’t about a character like me yet still touched me in such a real way. Ellie is adorable; she is intelligent, likeable, vulnerable and honest in a way that immediately draws you in to into her story. You are now a middle school-aged girl, floating your summer away in the pool, wishing that you felt comfortable in your body, wishing that your mother understood and accepted you, wishing that you weren’t embarrassed and made a social pariah at school. Although my weight wasn’t the factor that separated me from others growing up, I can completely empathize with Ellie’s struggle and I want nothing more for her than adults who support and uplift her and classmates who treat her with kindness. The snippet ended entirely too soon, and I am beyond excited to read more. I wish that there were more books that dealt with weight and body image when I was growing up, especially in this open and candid manner. This book, and others like it, are certainly needed.
