First of all, the cover is so fun and happy! The cover art is so perfect for this book. I also love books in written in prose for myself and for kids and teens who can be overwhelmed by a page full of words. This book was so accessible to all readers. I truly wish I knew some middle grade kiddos because this book was such a joy to read. Ellie, is such an endearing protagonist and poet in this book. I was transported to my middle school days and the universal struggles of being that age. But Ellie has the added difficulty of being an overweight kid and the pressures from her family, peers and society to change her appearance. Her mom and brother are exceptionally cruel sometimes in their treatment of Ellie. But she has her safe places in her pool, the library and her new friend Catalina's house. Through therapy, friendship and some mistakes Ellie learns to love her body and change her thinking around her appearance.
