I honestly feel conflicted after reading the first look of Sparrow. Sparrow is an insanely talented ballerina and is late for her ballet class when the book begins. She is making a mad dash through the parking lot when she is (kind of?) hit by a car. The driver is Tristan King, a guy Sparrow and her friend Delaney have had a crush on for years. Tristan rushes out of the car to help Sparrow. He has a first aid kit in his car and puts Band-Aids on both of her knees. Then, he kisses them. Ugh! I cringed and wanted to vomit at that part. I cr-omited. He apologizes for being a jerk in 5th grade and for making fun of Sparrow for being a ballerina, but still kind of makes fun of her for being a ballerina. And she falls for it! Here is where I am conflicted: I think that Sparrow should already get that this guy Tristan is awful but also get why she doesn't. My 36-year-old brain sees this male teenager as gross and misogynistic but, if I look at this with my 16-year-old brain, I may have reacted the same as Sparrow. Based on the summary, and the comparisons to Laurie Halse Anderson's speak, I am curious enough to keep reading.
