Triggers abound in this raw and honest novel; I had a tough time reading and I have no history of abuse. But following Sparrow on her journey, albeit painful, was a powerful experience. As a woman, a friend, a partner, and a mother, this book touched on so many emotions for me. I began the book frustrated by Sparrow's toxic relationship, but that quickly transformed to compassion and sadness, and ultimately joy.

There's a lot going on in this novel; the trajectory of Sparrow and Tristan's relationship was glossed over in favor of focusing on her recovery. The dual narration by Sparrow and Lucas was a surprise to me, and it was a technique that created a more layered novel. I suspect teenagers and young adults may react differently to the book than I did as a middle-aged mother, but it is still a story that will illicit strong emotion and make for powerful discussion.
