This book had me hooked after just the first chapter. I thought it was a very eye-opening look into what an abusive relationship is like. I love how the writing alternated back and forth from Sparrow's and Lucas's point of view - I thought it was very interesting and important to get insight from both the abuse victim, as well as from one of the victim's loved one who was on the outside looking in. As someone who has not personally had to deal with anything like this, I think this book really taught me a lot about abuse and how those affected by it deal with their feelings. I felt like I connected a bit more to Lucas's character - I could see myself reacting in many of the same ways he did if I were in his shoes. I couldn't understand why Sparrow seemed so naive at first, but as her history and her relationship with her mother were revealed, I totally got it. It was very interesting and heartbreaking to read about the effects of abuse on young kids and teenagers.
