I read Anderson’s Speak nearly ten years ago when I first started teaching and it was part of the curriculum for our sophomore students. It was a tough read that needed what we would now call trigger or content warnings. I had a hard time getting through it and have since steered clear of any of her books knowing there are going to be some tough issues that I’ll have too hard of a time emotionally getting through. Knowing this one is being compared to Speak for similar reasons is enough for me to say, no thanks. I expect I’ll have many students that will be interested in reading it and that’s great, but not for me.
