For the most part, I enjoyed reading this fantasy/romance. I loved the setting and the writing was excellent. This was my first book by Dao and certainly won't be my last. While I hadn't read the other companion books, it was easy enough to follow and made me want to go back and read them.
I found the characters likable for the most part if not a bit simple and it felt a bit saccharine overall. I never really felt a large degree of tension. The ending was predictable but at least the journey was enjoyable. I loved the folklore/fairy tale feel that the book had and the romance was cute as well but didn't really pack much of a punch and I didn't feel as invested in their relationship as I would've liked.
I definitely liked Bao more than Lan but she grew on me a bit as the story progressed.
