I was really attracted by the cover at first and the story synopsis sounded like one of those asian fairy tales/myths that I used to love reading when I was a child. Ms. Dao’s prose was easy to follow and lovely to read. The story appears quite simple but I loved how nuanced the setting and the plot was. The character of Lan was easy to misinterpret but you kind of see where she was coming from that you would understand her behaviour. Bao was one of those male leads that can be considered the silent but devoted type. The adventure they go through pretty much sets up their romantic development which I found really refreshing. Overall there is nothing much you would not enjoy about this book.
