What I've loved most about Julie's books so far is they've all been set in the same world and that no matter the timeline, they compliment each other in some way. Song of the Crimson Flower was no exception. This is a rather simple book but has a lot of heart with main characters, Bao and Lan. It goes through themes of how to break a curse, heart break, regret, and falling in love as well.

Dao's writing never fails to hold up the world the she creates for as a reader, I always see everything like a picture in my mind. She has a talent for pulling readers in, giving them reasons to care about her characters, and then having a stunning world of lore, magic, and hope to keep you going. While you don't need the other books in this companion series to understand this one, I highly recommend just to really flesh out the world and get your roots.
