I think that this book was very well written. I really liked the world building and character development throughout it, and I think that the author made it a beautiful love story. However, I do think that the messages of the book were a little narrow minded, and not fully thought through. For example, I think that the author missed the opportunity to present some moral debates about the use of blood in her medicines, and that the main characters dismissed the use of the black spice a little too quickly. I also think that a lot of opportunities were missed with Tam's character; in some ways he is like Bao in that he is trying to escape the constraints of his birth, but we write Tam off as a spoiled brat who's too selfish for his own good.
Over all, I think that the strongest part of this book is definitely Romance, and we watch Bao and Lan grow together beautifully. But, I do think that other parts of it was underdeveloped.
