Song of the Crimson Flower is the first book that I have read from Julie C. Dao, but it won't be my last, given how much I enjoyed this young adult fantasy book. There's magic and romance and tenderness. I enjoyed this so, so much!
The story revolves around Lan, who is an upper class girl, and Bao, who is not of the upper class, but is in love with Lan. When Bao gets cursed, the two have to journey to find a way to break the curse. And it's during this journey that both the main characters experience self-reflections about their lives and what they want out of it. Bao may have loved Lan, but he never really knew her, at least not at first. And Lan, who was originally in love with another man in the beginning, starts to see that she can want different things in life that will make her happier.
