I really enjoyed it
One of the first things that jumped out to me about this book was the cover. It’s striking something that really draws you in and makes you want to learn more about the story. Another aspect of the story was the characters I believe they are Asian I really love reading stories about different cultures and learning more about them. I really enjoyed that part. As far as the characters themselves i’m a little conflicted Lan the main character comes from a noble family who is in love with a boy named Tam. However a poor orphan named Bao is in love with Lam she doesn’t realize that but the story early on does show you what happens when he confesses. One thing that really makes me angry when I read books is insta love especially when characters don’t give explanations for their love. Another thing that bothers me about lan in particular is her superior view of her station in life compared to Bao’s it shows classism and I hate that in books. However the author might be setting her character up to go and evolve throughout the story. If so that would make a compelling plot line. I really enjoyed this first look and would pick this up just simply to learn about a different culture. I’m really enjoying that more books lately are about different cultures and different characters than the standard you often read about in books.
