To start off this first look of Song of the Crimson Flower I would like to say that the cover and art within the book is beautiful. On top of that Miss Julie Dao has wonderfully descriptive language that appealed to every single one of my senses. This story is a multiple p.o.v standalone that has incredible promise. It is a Vietnamese fantasy novel that seems to take inspiration from old tales such as Beauty and the Beast with a diverse promise of so much more. Dao is able to provide those classic roots whilst making it all her own and it is admirable. The accuracy within the novel of the hierarchy, royalty, anti-witch opinions, and various other details provide enough context to be able to surround yourself with the story and the time in which it took place. The mother-daughter relationship between Lan and Lady Vu is full of love and the family dynamic is heart-warming as well. I can see Song of the Crimson Flower being many reader's new favorite on their fantasy shelf. I am looking forward to its release.
