A stunningly vibrant world of magic and love
So many stories today create a cast of characters that are at opposite ends of a spectrum from one another. One bold and brash, the other shy and deep. One easily liked, the other pushing every button and driving people up the wall. Rarely anymore do we find a story where both protagonists are so inherently lovely as we find here. Within a few short pages, I found myself heart and soul invested in Bao and Lan. I want nothing but happiness and joy for them.
Julie Dao has created truly vivid imagery in this book. Another culture, another time, has leapt from the pages and drawn me in. I am so eager to read more of this story. I want to see where Lan's adventures take her. I want to see how Bao's education continues. I want to see what happens with the black spice. Is it a saving grace, or a tool of insinuation designed to bring a kingdom to its knees?
