So Many Beginnings is a remixed take on the classic Little Women story, featuring Black women as the main characters in the Freedpeople's colony of Roanoke toward the end of the Civil War. We've got Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, who are in their mid-to-upper teens, learning what they offer both in their colony and in the outside world. Their motivations and paths aren't carbon copies of the original story, and that's what makes this book all the more wonderful and realistic.
Morrow creates scenes that are easy to picture and make you feel like you're there. There's humor, sadness, and joy, and there's not a single March sister that you don't want to root for. One of my favorite things about the story was its setting-though I've heard of Freedpeople's colonies, I don't think I ever had any insight into them as to what they were like, the concerns of the people there, and how it still wasn't a truly free life, especially while the Civil War continued. This was an eye-opening read and I highly recommend it!
