When I first read there was to be a Little Women retelling with Black sisters, I wondered what that would be like. I had assumed it would be a modern retelling but this contemporary historical retelling is preferable. A freed colony - wonderful! The girls are at one similar - their names and sibling dynamics are the same. But Morrow has made Meg a teacher rather than Jo - perhaps she will fix the dreaded Professor Baer problem??

This imaginative, smart retelling of a Civil War story from the perspective of a freed family is captivating. I look forward to reading more!
