To be honest – I’ve never read Little Women. Not that I don’t like the classics, I have FAR too many books of my preferred genres to read – romance, romantic suspense, true crime. There is just not enough time in the day to read every kind of book.

To me, the classics should remain just that – classic. There is NO need for re-telling a story. It’s been done once – unless it needs to be edited or have questionable parts removed (if feasible).

There have been 10 (not including this book) “re-tellings” of this story in print. As far as film – six movies (1917 [the year my grandmother was born]; 1918, 1933, 1949, 1994 [at least there were 45 years between movies], and recently in 2019 [another 25 years]). TV adaptations were not included. That is roughly 15 versions not including the original or this most recent one.

It isn’t just this book, but some other books are doing just that – simply re-telling/re-packaging a story to fit the most current “demographic” or generation.

I do appreciate what the author is trying to do here. Personally, I would prefer a fresh, NEW story rather than a “change” or twist on an old one. Books that are a re-telling (especially one that has been done over so much) get passed by me. I want originality, something I can’t get from someone else. I want the book to stand out in some way – tell me a NEW story.

I do give kudos to any author who is bold enough to submit an idea for publication. It is definitely a leap of faith considering the mental toll and anxiety with rejection, especially during a pandemic.

On a positive note, the cover is beautiful and well done. It brings the characters to life. They become real people rather than “characters”. So much so, that these ladies deserve their own story and not one that came before them.

I am certain some readers might love this story.
