I am not a fan of retellings. And this one seems almost like a rewrite set as it doesn’t seem to offer much new in regard to plot. But maybe there are some different twists to be found in the story.
That being said, I want to hear black own voices and not necessarily a retelling as I’m not sure a retelling set in the same time is the way to go. There is a desperate need for diversity in characters, plots, settings, and a need for more POC authors. So I would pick it up despite my dislike of retellings.
The cover is beautiful and it would catch my eye on a shelf.
