With all of the problems that African-Americans still face, and certainly did back in "slave times," the Freedpeople's Colony of Roanoke Island sounds almost like a fantasy of the sci-fi or "magicks" variety.
I would expect this to have the same charm and family drama of the original "Little Women," but with the extra oomph of a story that imagines someplace where people can live good lives free of slavery and oppression.
