I hate Marie Lu. Why do I submit myself to the torture of reading every one of her books as soon as it's released? I know it's going to end on a cliffhanger, and leave me in tears. I know that. But still, here I am. In utter and absolute shock at the book I just read. No other author gets me attached to every single character, and no other author makes me sob with everything they write. I can't do this anymore. I shouldn't do this to myself anymore. But, I'll continue, because she's my favorite author.

Ok, so on the topic of the book. This was amazing. It follows Talin, a Striker for the nation of Mara. She is the last line of defense against Karensa, and is tasked with killing Ghosts, monsters sent to defeat them. After sparing a Karensan deserter, she discovers things that will change her forever, and change what she fights for.

I will admit to doing this book a disservice. This is the type of book you need to set aside an entire day for. Shut your door, exile your family. This book deserves your full and undivided attention. It didn't get this from me, but it was still amazing. The plot hooks you from the first page, and there is never a weak moment. This book is totally action packed, but every character gets development, and gets a chance to shine.

While we're on the topic of characters, let's talk about how much I love them. Red was by far my favorite, I mean, when do we ever complain about a tormented book boy? It's hard to choose a favorite though, Adena, Jaren, and Aramin were all well written side characters. I'm super excited to see how their journey continues on the next book, even though I know some of them won't make it through. Lu doesn't care about our emotions.

Like all of her books, this was a slow burn romance. And its enemies to lovers, what else can we ask for?? Saying it's a romance is pushing it though, because it's barely there. Im definitely looking forward to watching it develop in the next book. The romance in this really reminded me of Day and June's, so no complaints at all.

Well, if I'm absent for the next few days, it's probably because I'm rereading this on a constant loop, and refusing to believe that I have to wait a year to get the next book. There'll probably also be a healthy dose of tears and shouting in there, because emotions. As I said before, this book is amazing. Everyone needs to read it, and experience the magnificence that is Lu's writing.
