When I first read the First Impression, I really wanted a copy but I didn't have enough points to claim it and I didn't win the raffle. Since then I've been waiting for this book to come out and when I found it at my local library, I immediately checked it out. The story is as good as the beginning and it continues to be exciting, adventurous, magical, and interesting. I read through the book so fast!
First of all, I really liked this fictional world and the dichotomy between Mara and the Karensa Federation. The writing provided vivid imagery of all the places which highlighted the differences in technology, wealth, treatment of citizens, etc. between them. I liked how the Karensa Federation seemed very advanced and prosperous but if you looked closely at how the place is truly governed, you can see it's all a facade. But we also learn Mara might not be the best place either... That's why I want to read on and I can't wait for book two!
Next, I really liked all the characters and how the author is not shy about killing them or injuring them. No one is coasting through the story with all the luck on their side. Everyone has a backstory and something or someone the drives them. I like how the author weaves the background throughout the story. My favorite character is Talin's mother because she is so badass! I loved how selfless and determined she was, how she taught those great traits to her daughter, how she supported Talin even if their life was in danger and how she chose to fight instead of running and hiding. We see that Talin's mother is in danger at the end of the book, which is another reason I am anticipating the sequel.
Last but not least, I liked the storyline (obviously). It reminds me of Attack on Titan in that there is a group of soldiers that fight monsters the enemy has created from humans. The killing spot is also very similar: both located on the neck. But even though those points are similar there are still original ideas in this story. I liked following a female protagonist and how being mute doesn't affect her abilities at all. How she communicates with Red is also interesting and that plays a huge role throughout the story. There is still so much I want to know about the characters and what will happen next, I can't wait for the second book!
