Skyhunter is the newest fantasy/sci-fi offering from Marie Lu and let me just start off by saying it is amazing!! I haven’t read any Marie Lu and very few fantasy but this makes me want to dive more into fantasy books. Skyhunter tells the story of Talin and her journey as a Striker fighting for the country of Mara against the Federation. She had lost her home of Basea to the Federation when she was little, and her and her mother fled to Mara to start anew. In Mara, her kind are called rats and required to live in the outer city. Talin wouldn’t typically be allowed to be a Striker but her friend, Corian, told their leader (Firstblade) that he would not fight unless Talin was his partner or what they called Shields. Talin is a great protagonist, she is likable and strong while also being flawed. She is also mute which I have not seen in any books that I’ve read. It was interesting to read how she signs and reacts to people. Her friends Adena and Jeran are also her fellow Strickers they are smart, talented and also very likable. Throughout this entire story I was scared for the characters and just wanted to keep on reading to find out what was going to happen next. I’m so upset that it ended in a cliffhanger and I have to wait until September 2021 to read the sequel!
