This excerpt was really gripping! You can feel Talin's visceral, raw pain. There's definitely post-apocalyptic vibes from the setting, with the mentions of the "Early Ones" and their left-behind architecture and machines. I can tell this story is going to some dark places. I'm intrigued by the mystery of the prisoner and liked what I saw of the supporting cast, Jeran and Adena, too.
