Sci-fi for the win
I honestly believe Marie Lu can do no wrong. I knew Skyhunter was going to be a must read after hearing about it, but WOW, was I impressed. Throughout the book we follow Talin as she's introduced and forced to work alongside Red, to protect the nation of Mara. As a striker, she fights the Karensa Federations force of ghosts (humans turned into monstrous creatures.) I absolutely loved the political intrigue and complex world-building. The locations, history, and culture were rich without being overwhelming.
Though it's a very plot-focused book with action happening all the time, I loved the characters. Not only was Talin a compelling protagonist, but her friends Adena and Jeran weren't at all 2D. Red's character is so interesting I wouldn't at all be mad if it was a dual perspective.
What really pulled the book together was the details Lu is sure to incorporate into her writing. The use of sign language and the importance of language, multi-representation of trauma, abusive relationships, grief, and platonic/romantic relationships were so well done.
