I was so excited to read this book after reading the synopsis of it online. The premise of the story is really unique in that it centers around a young woman, Luli Wei, growing up in pre-code Hollywood who is desperate and willing to do whatever it takes in order to become a movie star. The studio heads in the story are not just ruthless and cruel; they actually deal in blood and ancient magic and Luli is caught up in all of this on her path to becoming a starlet. The magical elements of this story are a nice touch and truly transforms the novel into a unique tale. However, some parts of the novel were slightly confusing at times because of the lack of details surrounding the type of magic described in the story. The middle parts of the book were also a little slow and I found my interest waning throughout these parts. The author has a nice writing style but I feel as though the story could have done with more explanations and details about the magical elements because it was difficult to picture some scenes due to the lack of these details. The cover, however, is so beautiful!
