Life is short and there are so many books I want to read that I just can’t force my way through a book that doesn’t engage me. I was looking forward to this book based on the Bookish first look. The idea of a fantastical Hollywood was intriguing, I enjoy historical fiction, and I thought a Chinese American perspective would be refreshing.

I tried so many times to get into the story and truly dozed off every time. The writing is full of beautiful descriptions, yet they get in the way of the plot moving forward and become trite and cliche. Whole paragraphs go by that are just a lot of words and no real meaning. “He was a poor old forgotten lorthario on a haunted street, and I tightened my jaw.” Sentences like this frustrated me.

I don’t know what else to say except that this book just wasn’t for me. I really wish I could have gotten beyond the jumble of words to the true storyline, because I believe there’s a good one in there.
