Beautiful writing, but a bit scattered
This is a fantasy book set in old Hollywood with a mysterious Chinese American protagonist who wants to be an actress. She works her way through the complicated and sometimes horrifying world of fame and film, making huge sacrifices along the way.
I loved the prose in this book and it brought to mind a gorgeous and sparkling setting with sinister undertones. However, the magical aspect of this book left me unsatisfied and confused- I had many questions that went unanswered. Overall, I did like this book, but the frustration I felt overshadowed some of the positive things about it. I wish it had been a longer novel. I would definitely read more from this author in the future and I want to explore some of the other works out there because the writing truly was beautiful. I recommend this for people who like literary historical fantasy stories.
