The backstory makes up for it

As I started to read, I was extremely confused - the main character seems very out of touch with reality and it comes through in every moment of the first chapter. While it's interesting, it's hard to start a book written that way, and I almost gave up. But reading the chapter about Wally and Henry together in high school was absolutely engrossing and made up for the strange start.
