This collection of short stories highlights the issues faced by immigrant women of color. While some of the stories are bittersweet, others are just hugely upsetting! As a 65+ white woman, I felt I understood subtle racism. These stories pointed out issues I didn't even think about. These are strong women facing a legal system that makes everyday living difficult at best. Being a high achiever and very successful in your field, does not exempt you from racism in casual or personal relationships either. The games that have to be played in order to get an education with a student visa is a nightmare! Finding a partner or romantic relationship is one hurdle after another.
This book really opened my eyes and reminded me that we all need to learn of the issues facing immigrants. Perhaps if we familiarize ourselves with their plight, we can truly help each other become as strong as the women in this book.
