I would say that overall Secrets So Deep is a pretty nice read. We follow our protagonist Avril as she returns to the place her mother died to she can unlock the truth of what really happened. The premise is interesting, and while at times uncovering small details about the mystery felt a bit slow, the reveal of the truth was definitely a plot twist and made the core mystery of it all really good.

I liked the overall plot of the story, but at times I did find myself getting a little lost. Ginny Myers Sain is definitely good at writing stories that are very atmospheric, and there is a bit of a magical realism element with these really hypnotic moments where Avril is lost in memories or these moments that pull her towards the water. The idea is cool and I don't think the execution was bad, but for me it was just really hard at times to feel grounded enough in the story or to really know what was going on in the moment. It's not my personal style, but I think the author pulled it off well enough. If you're like me and not as into things that lean a little too magical realism, I do think the characters and plot help make up for it so that the story is still enjoyable.
