I enjoyed reading Savage Tongues, and got through it in one sitting. It was a very heavy, and powerful, read about Arezu’s sexual traumas and experiences and the impact they’ve made on her life. I appreciated the author’s dual take on Arezu’s trauma but also her twisted desire for Omar. As the story progressed, I really liked that Arezu’s was able to start to come to peace with her trauma and let some of her pain go.

I also enjoyed the intercultural relationships throughout this book. I loved that an Iranian American was best friends with an Orthodox Jewish woman who was also an advocate for Palestinians rights. The message of cross-cultural friendships was almost more powerful than Arezu’s experiences with Omar.

I would recommend Savage Tongues but reader be warned that it is a heavy, emotional, and at sometimes very dark read. However, where there is darkness, there is also light in Arezu’s story.
